American Corner Skopje opened January 25, 2005 at the City Library “Braka Miladinovci” in Skopje. U.S. Ambassador Lawrence E. Butler and Minister of Culture Blagoj Stefanovski spoke and cut the ceremonial ribbon at the opening event.

“An American Corner is a resource center, where students, teachers, businesspeople, government and non-governmental organization leaders, journalists, researchers and the general public can come to learn more about the United States,” Ambassador Butler said in his remarks at the opening.

The American Corner Skopje project is the result of a partnership between the Macedonian Ministry of Culture and the “Braka Miladinovci” City Library in Skopje, and receives support from the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy.

An important mission of American Corner Skopje is to build bridges of understanding between people of the United States of America and the Republic of Macedonia.

American Corner Skopje provides access to current and reliable information from and about the United States via book collections, magazines, CD-ROM databases, the Internet, and through local activities related to U.S. history, government, economics, society, culture, values, arts, and other topics.

At American Corner Skopje, you can find brochures and publications on media, education, economics, terrorism, trafficking, arts and culture that you can use for your research work.

American Corner Skopje also serves as an alumni center where citizens of Macedonia who have been to the United States on exchange programs can gather together, and keep in touch with their American and Macedonian contacts.

The American Corner hosts a variety of events designed to bring Americans and Macedonians closer together. Programs regularly include U.S. speakers, Embassy officers, Fulbright Scholars, video and DVD showings, exhibits, round-table discussions, seminars, mini-conferences and workshops.

All segments of the population are welcome to use the American Corner resources free of charge. We hope they will find them useful and interesting. Please stop by and join us. Membership is free to everyone.
