As part of U.S. Embassy Skopje’s October breast cancer awareness activities, Speaker Dorothy Gibbons Weston from The Rose in Houston, TX gave breast cancer awareness talks throughout Macedonia. PAS worked in collaboration with a local partner, the NGO BORKA, and other groups. Gibbons’ audiences ranged from small groups of women in rural areas throughout Macedonia to a roundtable held with women MPs. “What touched me the most,” she said, "was when the women in Prshovce, Tetovo brought their daughters to hear my talk. Women know they need this information.” For a general audience at an American Corner, she explained how she built her organization from scratch, starting from a bachelor auction that raised $7,000 into today’s enterprise that delivers more than 70,000 services per year and includes a physician network with 597 members who donate $3 million per year in services. “Different groups can work well together,” she said, “when at least one of them isn’t concerned about who is getting the credit.” During her stay, Gibbons was interviewed by several print and nationally broadcast media outlets and also appeared on the government channel that covers Parliament as she challenged female Parliamentarians to work with NGOs to fight this disease.

A/S Fried: I think, to be honest, every American administration has been friendly to your country and whether it is Obama or McCain, the next American president will be a friend of Macedonia. But, I also have to be honest, I can guarantee that the next American president is not going to know as much as President Bush does about the name issue. He really understands this. He has spoken to the leaders, he has listened to their arguments, he asks me how I am doing, he follows this. International Religious Freedom Report

September 19, 2008

Secretary Rice: "We are a country founded on the belief that all men and women are created equal, that as equals we enjoy certain universal and inalienable rights, and that among these are the right to live without oppression, to worship as we wish, and to think and speak and assemble without retribution. For nations that uphold the liberty and dignity of every citizen, they discover, as we have, that these highest of ideals are a source of strength, success, and stability. Nations must not only make peace with their neighbors, they must make peace with themselves, and that means respecting diversity, and protecting it in law."...full text l Briefing by Amb. Russia's Future is in Russia's Hands

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Addresses U.S.-Russia Relations at the German Marshall Fund

September 18, 2008/ Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C.

Secretary Rice: "This vision of the world is not without its problems, or its setbacks, or even its significant crises – as we have seen in recent days. But it is this open, interdependent world, more than any other in history, that offers all human beings a greater opportunity for lives of peace, prosperity, and dignity. Whether Russia’s leaders overcome their nostalgia for another time, and reconcile themselves to the sources of power and the exercise of power in the 21st century – still remains to be seen. The decision is clearly Russia’s – and Russia’s alone. And we must all hope, for the good of the Russian people, and for the sake of us all, that Russia’s leaders make better and right choices."…full text.
