The January 23 meeting between DUI leader Ali Ahmeti and DPA leader Menduh Thaci to reaffirm the importance of fair, democratic competition in the upcoming elections demonstrated commendable leadership, communication, and cooperation.  We congratulate both leaders for taking the necessary early steps to ensure that the citizens of this country can choose their future President and local leaders in the best possible environment free from violence and intimidation.  We would encourage all parties to engage in regular dialogue and cooperation throughout the electoral process to ensure it meets international standards.
