Fact Sheet

New U.S. Embassy Compound
Skopje, Republic of Macedonia

- The design and construction contract was awarded to the American firm Kellogg, Brown and Root Services, Incorporated (KBRS) in September 2005.

- Beton, a Macedonian firm, has been named by KBRS as the local subcontractor for the temporary facilities to be built on the site.

- To date, no decision has been made on local subcontracting for the permanent Embassy buildings.  In its construction projects, KBRS typically hires local subcontractors and local labor to carry out the projects.

- The new U.S. Embassy Compound on Gradiste will include a new Chancery, as well as support buildings for security and administrative functions.  It will not be a residential facility.

- The design is intended to blend into the site, not to dominate it.  The buildings will be low-lying and the site will be landscaped so that the new construction becomes part of the hill on which it is situated.

- The main office building will have more than 4,000 square meters of office space, and about 9,000 square meters of support space.

- Around 50 million U.S. dollars will be invested in the construction of the new Embassy.  It is anticipated that the construction will employ more than 200 local workers at times, and that it will add over 31.6 million U.S. dollars to the economy of the city and region.

- Approximately 70 Americans and more than 200 employees from Macedonia will work at the new Embassy after it opens.  U.S. Embassy offices that are currently located at the Chancery on Ilindenska Boulevard and at several other locations in Skopje will be housed in the new Embassy Compound.

- A final design of the buildings is currently being developed in the U.S.  When the design is completed, the Embassy will release further information.

- The new Embassy will include an attractive open atrium, and places for displaying American and Macedonian works of art.

- All facilities of the new U.S. Embassy will be accessible to people with disabilities, in accordance with U.S. Government regulations on new federal buildings.  For example, it will have ramps for wheelchairs, special parking spaces, accessible toilet facilities, and elevators.

- More than half of the site will consist of green space.  There will be grass, trees, plants, shade and open space.

- Construction materials to be used in the new Embassy will come from the U.S., the Republic of Macedonia, and other countries.  American and Macedonian engineers, designers and other specialists will work together on this project.
