Passports

General Information

American citizens residing or traveling abroad who require issuance of a U.S. passport will be issued the latest, state-of-the-art passport incorporating a photo-digitized image and other enhanced security features. U.S. Embassies and Consulates achieve this goal by transferring the passport issuance function to a domestic U.S. passport facility.

The average time for processing a new passport is approximately one week to ten days from the time of the application. However, American citizens are encouraged to apply early for renewal of their expiring passports.

U.S. Embassies and Consulates will continue to issue passports in emergency cases. Such passports will be limited in validity, and cannot be extended.

U.S. citizens, including minors, in need of passport services must appear in person at the U.S. Embassy in Skopje.

All consular fees should be paid in cash, either in US dollars or equivalent in denars. At this time we can not accept payment in Euro or by check or credit card.

The passport application form should not be signed until instructed to do so by a Consular Officer.

Applicants should be aware that the Embassy will reject any photographs that do not conform to U.S. Passport standards, (i.e., photo too small, headsize too small, not identical, out of focus, dark background).

Note: Vending machine photographs are unacceptable. Our photo requirements page and the Department of State's checklist for photographers have more details on the requirements for U.S. passport photographs.
