April 2008, A1 TV Skopje, Macedonia Ambassador Milovanovic: We and the President of the United States personally, were disappointed that it wasn’t possible to get a consensus for NATO to give an invitation to Macedonia. April 15, 2008, Washington, DC SECRETARY RICE: ..”I think it will be remembered as a summit where new members were admitted: Albania and Croatia. I know that the enlargement of NATO is controversial in some quarters, but I can tell you that when I sit in this alliance where now, 12 of the 26 members are former captive nations, it is an alliance that is reborn by the fact that it has members who have recent experience with tyranny... And so, the admission of Albania and Croatia was great. It was unfortunate that Macedonia could not be admitted. And as soon as that name issue is resolved, it will be admitted, and that came through very closely – very clearly”…more | View Video.
ASSISTANT SECRETARY FRIED: I don’t think it is so-called. Macedonian language exists. Macedonian people exist. It’s not – you know, we teach Macedonian at the Foreign Service Institute. We teach Serbian, we teach Croatian, now we teach Bosnian. There’s a debate in Montenegro as to Crnogorski Jezik, the Montenegrin language. All languages – and I speak now as – not as a bureaucrat, but as – you know, a former --a lapsed historian. All languages are – you know, are human creations and, you know, they develop over time and become codified. And it’s not up to – you know, there is a Macedonian language…full text.

America's position is clear: Macedonia should take its place in NATO as soon as possible…full text.

2007 Annual Report on Human Rights
Undersecretary Daniel Fried interview with A1 TV
The Republic of Macedonia has a golden opportunity to receive an invitation to NATO, well deserved after serious and successful reform efforts over many years. The name dispute with Greece stands as the remaining impediment. Political stability remains an essential element for any NATO aspirant. The United States Embassy urges all of Macedonia’s political leaders to focus their energies on getting into NATO at this critical time. U. Sean Vance, a registered architect, professor at North Carolina State University, and director of The Center for Universal Design, is currently touring Macedonia to spread the word about universal design. Universal design has its roots in design solutions that originally focused on accessibility issues, such as creating small ramps ("curb cuts") in sidewalks for wheelchairs mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Once deliverymen and those with rolling suitcases learned how useful the curb cuts were, they became widely accepted—even taken for granted. Universal design, then, seeks to increase quality of life for all, regardless of the abilities we have at any given moment in life...more | A1 TV Interview with Mr. Vance [video file (size 14.8MB)].

January 17, 2008 By David Pitts, Special Correspondent:.."If King were alive today, he would likely applaud the achievement of most of the aims of the 1963 march, while stressing that his dream still has not been fully realized, particularly as relates to equality of economic opportunity.
