» Statement of the United States Embassy regarding yesterday’s Events

May 13, 2008

All citizens of the Republic of Macedonia must be free to participate in the election process without intimidation or pressure.  Yesterday’s shocking shooting at a Democratic Union for Integration party rally, combined with multiple grenade attacks on DUI campaign offices and a series of other violent actions, gravely threatens that fundamental democratic right.  Macedonian authorities must defend the rights of their citizens and ensure the rule of law, urgently, consistently, and transparently.   Any political party that intimidates candidates or voters deserves no support.   As a friend and partner, the United States Embassy is deeply concerned about the current election atmosphere in Macedonia.

Excerpt Regarding NATO

Remarks by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the American-Turkish Council Luncheon

April 15, 2008, Washington, DC

SECRETARY RICE: ..”I think it will be remembered as a summit where new members were admitted: Albania and Croatia. I know that the enlargement of NATO is controversial in some quarters, but I can tell you that when I sit in this alliance where now, 12 of the 26 members are former captive nations, it is an alliance that is reborn by the fact that it has members who have recent experience with tyranny... And so, the admission of Albania and Croatia was great. It was unfortunate that Macedonia could not be admitted. And as soon as that name issue is resolved, it will be admitted, and that came through very closely – very clearly”…more | View Video.

PRESIDENT BUSH: I regret that NATO did not extend an invitation to Macedonia at this week's summit. Macedonia has made difficult reforms at home, and is making major contributions to NATO missions abroad. Unfortunately, Macedonia's invitation was delayed because of a dispute over its name. » STATEMENT FROM THE U.S. EMBASSY

March 19, 2008

The United States strongly wants a successful NATO enlargement now, including the Republic of Macedonia. Ambassador Milovanovic has been meeting with political party leaders to brief them on her recent consultations with U.S. officials in Washington on Macedonia's NATO candidacy. She has urged political leaders to support rapid conclusion of a negotiated settlement of the name issue. She is urging all parties to work actively together for national unity and a nonpolitical approach in order to achieve a successful outcome. Now is not the time for political gamesmanship. Now is the time to set aside party political calculation and instead to focus on achieving the future Macedonia wants for itself -- a future that the United States also wants for Macedonia. The United States is focusing its efforts on supporting progress in the UN mediation effort with the hope that we can all celebrate a NATO invitation at Bucharest.

President Bush Delivers State of the Union Address

January 28, 2008

President George W. Bush (Jan. 28):
"Seven years have passed since I first stood before you at this rostrum. In that time, our country has been tested in ways none of us could have imagined. We faced hard decisions about peace and war, rising competition in the world economy, and the health and welfare of our citizens. These issues call for vigorous debate, and I think it's fair to say we've answered the call. Yet history will record that amid our differences, we acted with purpose. And together, we showed the world the power and resilience of American self-government." Full Text | Policy Initiatives

Martin Luther King's Dream of Racial Equality

(A dream fulfilled?)

January 17, 2008

By David Pitts, Special Correspondent:.."If King were alive today, he would likely applaud the achievement of most of the aims of the 1963 march, while stressing that his dream still has not been fully realized, particularly as relates to equality of economic opportunity. It is a view also stressed by civil rights leaders, such as Height and Lewis. "We have made much of Dr. King's dream come true," says Lewis. But, he adds, "we still have a distance to go." Closing lingering economic and educational disparities among the races, however, is a much more complex task than ending legally sanctioned segregation and mandating voting rights."…more.
