American Trio Brings World Music to Macedonia

American composer, film maker, master percussionist, writer and arts educator Stacey Fox and her trio will visit Macedonia July 13-19, 2008. The trio will start the tour in Stip performing at Stip Summer Festival . The tour will continue in Bitola, the 2008 “City of culture”, on the Bitola summer festival. The tour will conclude with a performance in Skopje July 18th at 9:30 in Suli AN. Director of Cutting-edge Rural Studio Comes to Macedonia
July 2 & 3, 2008
David Buege, Interim Director of Rural Studio at Auburn University in Alabama is now in Macedonia as part of the U.S. Speakers Program in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture at the Universities of St. Cyrils and Methiodius. Rural Studio is known worldwide for its innovative program in teaching architecture students about social responsibility in their field. Each year, students build five homes in rural west Alabama for disadvantaged residents. Buege has taught at Auburn University, Mississippi State University, University of Arkansas, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and other universities. He is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Princeton University.

Watch a clip of the A1 Morning Show’s coverage of Cultural Envoy Merrilee Cunningham’s creative writing class at American Corner Skopje. Cunningham, a noted poet and university professor, has been writer-in-residence at our American Corners since June 17. She is currently teaching two classes at American Corner Bitola. This project is a collaboration among the U.S. Embassy, the Educational and Cultural Affairs bureau of the Department of State, and Writers in the Schools in Houston, Texas...(watch video file - size 12MB).

It also shows what is possible when ministries in Macedonia work together to address a common need, as the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior have done. In my own Mission, this project is a model example of interagency teamwork, involving active collaboration between the Departments of Justice, Defense, and State, in close cooperation with the U.S. European Command, EUCOM, based in Germany.”…more.

USAID Administrator Henrietta Fore Receives a Warm Welcome in Macedonia

From June 8th through 10th , USAID Administrator Henrietta Fore visited USAID projects ranging from school renovations to a newly created digital media park which recently won an Oscar for special effects. Ms. Fore also met with President Crvenkovski and a group of NGO leaders to stress the United States’ continued support for programs in education, good governance and economic growth. In an interview with Tea Moderna, Ms. Fore discussed the importance of women in leadership positions and highlighted the influential roles many women have in the US Government. Renowned Environmental Planner and Landscape Architect Visits Macedonia

U.S. Speaker Frederick Stein, dean of the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin will be in Macedonia through Saturday, June 21, to meet with faculty and students as well as government officials about landscape architecture and environmental planning. In the U.S., he has previously worked with local, state, and federal agencies on many kinds of environmental plans and designs, including an analysis of watershed level growth management on part of the U.S.-Mexico border, a master plan for a landfill site in Phoenix, Arizona, and the implementation of the U.S. Natural Resources Conversation Service agricultural land evaluation and site assessment system.

Macedonia: U.S. Speaker Reinforces the Core of Democracy during Turbulent Time

In the wake of Parliamentary elections marred by violence and fraud, U.S. Speaker and activist Ann Stone spent three days in Macedonia, where she gave lively overviews of the U.S. elections system and shared her take on the current election cycle at local universities and at the American Corners in Skopje and Tetovo. Stone also met with the women’s working group in Parliament and with a group of female journalists and NGO leaders. Everywhere she went, her talks led to spirited discussions about the very core of democracy—how elections can and should be free and fair.
