What is new at the Corner?
•  This month the American Corner Skopje will start the Conversational Hours. These meetings at the American Corner would be of great help to all those that lack the chance to practice there spoken English.

Held by American speakers these meetings will also be a great chance to learn more about American culture.

Most important dates in May

May 1

On this date in 1931, with the press of a button in Washington, D.C., President Herbert Hoover turned on the lights of the Empire State Building . This event officially opened the edifice, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street in New York City, to the public. At 102 stories, it reigned as the world's tallest skyscraper until 1974.

May 8

Dr. John S. Pemberton sold the first Coca-Cola in 1886, at Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia. Bookkeeper Frank Robinson coined the name and it is his handwriting we recognize as the Coca-Cola trademark. By the late 1890s, Coca-Cola was one of America's most popular fountain drinks.

May 9

President Woodrow Wilson iss ued a proclamation on May 9 , 1914 asking Americans to give a public expression of reverence to mothers through the celebration of Mother's Day. Carnations have come to represent this day.

May 27

San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge was completed and opened to pedestrian traffic on May 27 , 1937. Until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was completed in 1964, the Golden Gate's 4,200-foot orange-painted structural steel suspension span was the longest in the world.
