Ambassador Butler and Minister of Culture, Blagoj Stefanovski, opened the first American Corner at the House of Culture in Bitola on October 30, 2003. This project is the result of a partnership between the Macedonian Ministry of Culture and the Macedonian American Alumni Association, and is sponsored by the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy in Skopje.
The American Corner program is sponsored worldwide by the U.S. Department of State. The purpose of the Corner is to provide free information to the general public about the United States through books, magazines, CD-ROMs, and complimentary access to the Internet. There is a specialized area for information about anti-trafficking and anti-terrorism efforts. The Corner also host a wide variety of events: such as cultural programs and guest lectures from U.S. Embassy officials, Fulbright scholars, and others, video showings, poetry readings, Readers Club, and many other activities.
